AeroPress — Inverted Method

The AeroPress is a small immersion brewer with a paper filter — the cup is both clean and concentrated. Inverted method means you steep with the plunger upside down, then flip to press. Three minutes start to finish, and the result rivals a Chemex.

What you need

  • AeroPress
  • AeroPress paper filter (or metal disc)
  • Burr grinder
  • 17g whole bean coffee — Yirgacheffe Batch 001
  • 230g water at ~85°C / 185°F (cooler than V60)
  • Kettle
  • Scale
  • Timer
  • Mug

The method

  1. 01

    Invert the AeroPress

Insert the plunger about 1cm into the chamber. Flip the whole thing upside down so the plunger is on the bottom and the chamber opens at the top.

  2. 02

    Grind fine, prep filter

Grind 17g of coffee to a fine consistency — somewhere between drip and espresso. Place a filter in the filter cap and rinse with hot water. Set the cap aside.

  3. 03

    Dose and saturate

Add the grounds to the inverted chamber. Start the timer. Pour 60g of water to bloom — saturate all grounds and let stand 30 seconds.

  4. 04

    Fill and stir

Pour the remaining water up to 230g total. Give it 3 gentle stirs with a spoon to break the crust. Screw on the rinsed filter cap.

  5. 05

    Flip and press

At 1:30, flip the whole AeroPress onto your mug (cap-side down). Press steadily for 30 seconds until you hear a hiss — that's the end. Total brew time: ~2:00.

A few notes

  • Cooler water (85°C) is intentional — at 96°C this method goes bitter fast.
  • Dilute with hot water 1:1 for a longer cup, or drink as a concentrate.
